When the Capri Theater was built in 1931, it was one of three theaters located on West Broadway between the Mississippi and Robbinsdale. In its early years, the Capri, located at 2027 West Broadway, was called Paradise Theater. In the theater's heyday, the ceiling was made to look like a sky covered with stars and clouds, and movie goers could see a Saturday matinee for as little as nine cents. The Capri underwent numerous changes and renovations during the past 75 years. It shifted from a theater that could house nearly 600 people, with an orchestra pit and a balcony, to currently a theater with 220 seats, an orchestra pit that has been filled in and a balcony converted to classrooms and covered by a mural.Karl Reichert is the director of Capri Theater redevelopment for the Plymouth Christian Youth Center (PCYC). Their mission: To enrich the skills, prospects, and spirit of North Minneapolis area youth and adults in partnership with families and communities.
