Cranes and Crows - Reviews
'I like real voices, though some people don't. Ben Folds, Eef Barzelay (Clem Snide), John Darnielle (Mountain Goats), John Sampson (Weakerthans), and Chris DuBray (Some By Sea/Ghosts & Liars). Some people hate these bands because of the vocals, or maybe because of the uncoolness that comes from sounding like a regular Joe with something to say. This song is right in my wheelhouse, and I guarantee you'll love the last minute and a half at the very least.'

'When the record label responsible for putting out the small miracle that is Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago announces another release they are excited about, it's probably a good idea to take notice. I had never heard of Wisconsin band Cranes & Crows until the other day, had never heard of 19 year old singer/songwriter Paul Brandt - who is supposedly in a few bands throughout the area and is somewhat of a big deal if the label's press release is to be believed - but none of that mattered to me, or rarely ever does. What matters, of course, is the music. And this song immediately felt right. There's a bit of Bon Iver in the production, a bit of Elliott Smith in its sparseness, some 70s James Taylor in the vocals, a touch of Nick Drake in the guitar, and more than a little of the long, cold Wisconsin winter that no doubt inspired the whole thing.'

'Cranes & Crows will release Blame Winter tomorrow. At only 19, Paul Brandt is kind of a veteran of the Eau Claire local music scene. He has split his time manning the keyboards for such bands as Meridene, The Gentle Guest and the now-defunct Fine. This is his first attempt at his own project. It's sparse, emotive and quiet with acoustic guitar and piano driving most all the songs.'
