'You wouldn't expect this kind of sound to come out of South Dakota. Chad Sharp makes the type of R&B-inflected pop that has dominated the American charts for the last several years. His song Curious is representative of his work.
The mix and sound selection is gritty and tough-edged. The arrangement is very nice, though some of the gating tricks he has done on some of the drums (especially in the second verse) don't really click with my brain. The vocals are very well done, although a bit affected in an urban way that I personally have never cared for. The backing vocals are also nicely done with 11 herbs and spices from the effects box. The whole vocal arrangements works very well. The rap on the bridge is class-A, with a good rhythm, and works quite naturally. (Nothing like a paste-on rap in iambic pentameter to ruin that streetwise vibe.)
The chorus is the highlight melodywise, with a recognizable and friendly hook. The lyrics are, well, they're pop lyrics. Nothing to get excited over, though nothing too painfully cliched -- they'll receive neither Pulitzers nor embarassed snickers. The rap is the lyric highlight, where Chad demonstrates what I suspect are his true writing chops.
If he could extend that lyric prowess to the verses, we'd have a slam dunk on our hands. As it stands now, we merely have a nice jumpshot, well executed and it scores. This track won't win any converts to the style, but if you're a pop music fan, it's worth a listen. '~ Godsofmusic.com |
