dissociate - Reviews
'  Dissociate is another band I know nothing about, other than what I’ve heard. What I’ve heard has impressed me thoroughly, however. I’ve made attempts to classify it. Is it industrial? Is it noise? Is it EBM? The answer is all and none of the above. It even has elements of house and breakbeats, with nifty samples thrown in. With all this it comes closest to being power-noise, methinks. The first track “chain” rocks me, plain and simple. It starts out like a thudding metal tune, but quickly departs from that. Evil vocal samples and space-age bleeps drift across the pounding musical landscape before adding further layers of irresistible drum loops. Its yummy! “Bad touch” has thudding bass lines, droning synth lines, glitch noises and if I’m not mistaken, samples from the fantastic indie film “Buffalo 66”. No, it’s not a cover of the Bloodhound Gang. Its much, much better than that. I would dance to it. Or rather, stomp. “Waning” gets funky from the get-go. That’s one of the things I like about dissociate; they aren’t afraid to put the swing in. A friend and I were recently discussing club music, and he was telling me that he was finding most EBM to be devoid of soul and swing in the basslines, leaving him feeling empty. Well dissociate puts it in here in spades. Their synth lines are simple but effective; they come and go but never overpower. “Sirse” is my favorite track on this ep, and I consider it to be also the most clubworthy. It starts with a droning and a thudding, but has a barely discernable shimmery synth line overlying it. Glitches punctuate it, chimes surprise, and all this without any vocals at all. “De-Muse” has very deep bass indeed and continues for four minutes or so in that vein. “Khrysalis” begins with simple drums, adds the bass doof-doof thud, with space-squealing noises and a neat little running synth line. It gives “Sirse” a run for its money as my reigning favorite. Clearly it is one of the strongest tracks. I highly recommend checking out Dissociate. Its an impressive danceable noise disc, with no vocals and lots of character. As I grow old I am finding it odd the things which will inspire bootay-shaking in me, and this is one of those things. It even makes me shimmy, in an evil stompy way, of course. Recommended if you like: Ministry, Converter, Skinny Puppy, Concrete Nature, Oil 10 Stars: 4.5 Tracklisting: 1. chain 2. bad touch 3. waning 4. sirse 5. de-muse 6. khrysalis --bloodlossgirl'
