Sophistication, refinement, blazing guitar/mandolin and one hell of a voice combine to form one of the best acoustic groups around known simply by their names, Boyd Lee and Joe Cruz. The two weave a gorgeous musical tapestry ranging from folk, latin, pop, jazz, rock and bluegrass, complementing each other intuitively-Boyd’s voice soaring overhead and his rhythms powerful as a drummer while Joe’s lead guitar/mandolin blazes a trail that leaves the audience exhausted and spent.
Boyd and Joe perform either as a duet or more recently and more often today, as a trio with harmonica master/percussionist Noah Hoehn. As a trio they push the boundaries of acoustic music offering an exciting and innovative live performance rarely seen these days.
A veteran of the Twin Cities since 1985, Boyd began his music career with the jam band The Spaceheaters as lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist; one of the twin cities largest drawing bands for over 7 years. Throughout his career Boyd has focused his attention on acoustic music; writing, recording and performing for himself and others. Renowned as one the finest vocalist’s/guitarist’s in town, Boyd can be found performing with any number of Twin Cities favorites including Joe Cruz, Gwen Matthews and Mary Jane Alm.
Joe Cruz is regarded as one of the finest multi-string instrumentalists around. With influences ranging across the globe Joe Cruz’s technical versatility is matched only by the intense emotion he puts into his playing. Live you’ll often see him switch from jazz guitar to bluegrass mandolin at the drop of a hat and he is continually sought after for guitar/mandolin/electric guitar/quatro work in both the studio and live performances.
With their second CD, Long Way Down, just released and plenty of gigs on the calendar, both Boyd and Joe are busy and like it that way. We want to stay in people’s minds and play as often as possible. We’re a live act first and foremost and I want everyone to hear this thing. That’s the bottom line.
