Pioneer Memoir The Checkered Years Now Available in Audio Edition
““July 10, 1884. Nobody can imagine how beautiful the wheat fields look, whole sections without a break waving in the breeze. What would the old Vermonters say of it? I wish they could see Cass County now, just as it stands, one vast ocean of wheat.”
The pioneer diary of Mary Dodge Woodward is now available for the first time in an audio edition, narrated by Laura French. Written between 1884 and 1889, the journals were edited by Woodward’s granddaughter, Mary Boynton Cowdrey, and originally published in 1937 as The Checkered Years. Woodward had moved to the farm in Dakota Territory, to keep house for her son. The Checkered Years is memoir, women’s history, Great Plains history--as well as a primer on the economics of the Bonanza Farm and a wonderful guide to perennial gardening.
